Happy days

February 22, 2021 – My H-E-B (revised 4/20/21)
February 22, 2021 – My H-E-B

Texans are proud of a lot of things, chief among them being our homegrown H-E-B grocery stores. Named for founder Howard E. Butt, they have a great tagline: “Here Everything’s Better.”

When the weeklong freeze hit, many folks wished H-E-B could take over the logistics. And the feel-good story of a local store that lost its power just before the storm made national news due to their generosity in letting everyone just leave with their groceries …

But the patch for Monday, February 22nd commemorates a significant milestone: after 11 months of having our groceries delivered, I finally went shopping. It was wonderful to be able to pick out my own produce and meat, but I have to say the H-E-B personal shoppers were a godsend for the many many times we used their services.

More good news: I finally reworked the iced pelican from February 19th

by zooming in on this image …

Then inserted the new patch into last week’s patchplay …

I feel better now 😉

  1. Sounds like a great store and a good business model, as their customers will probably remain loyal and spread the word. Isn’t it nice to have people really care? I’m glad you are content with the redo, that’s what counts.

    1. HEB is always the first to arrive with water after a natural disaster … and I remember a story after Hurricane Harvey where people escaped flooding in a Houston area HEB

  2. Deep in the heart of Texas is a big hearted grocery…H-E-B is that grocery and I was proud to read of their generosity during the Texas freeze. They were always the grocery we went to when we lived in Texas; welcoming, inviting, and helpful. I had always wanted to try nopales (cactus) but was not too thrilled about removing the spines and the grocery clerk showed me how to do it and in fact, filled a bag for me. H-E-B’s gourmet store, Central Market in Austin was also a special favorite of ours and in fact the first time that our girls and son in law came to visit us in Texas we took them to Central Market. They thought it was strange that we brought them to a grocery store since they lived in San Francisco, the “gourmet” capital of the US but after spending time at Central Market, they were in awe and loved the experience.

    1. Central Market is absolutely amazing … the good news is that the HEB stores are carrying more and more Central Marketed branded groceries. Every so often there’s a rumor that a Central Market will be built just down the road for us … if only it could be true!

And I still haven’t worked up the courage to try nopales 😉

  3. LA – great news about the local store – restores faith and hope. And there are times when we just need to fix stuff like that patch because it was going to niggle. Go well. B

  4. There are good people in the world, this is a wonderful example of it. And hooray for going to the grocery store. I will confess, there are certain grocery stores that I just love… Probably a result of hanging out in my grandparents small family grocery store as a young child. 🙂

    1. oh, your comment took me back to George’s grocery on Shelter Island … a converted house, it was dark with narrow aisles and wood floors. But it boasted truly homemade bakery items and toothsome cheeses (I recall a rat-trap cheddar that was so sharp it could bite back) … and the penny candy selection couldn’t be beat!

    1. it’s interesting … where to draw the line between an experiment to be used as a learning opportunity and one that you never want to replicate
