And they’re off …

There’s a lot to be said for a rainy, chilly day as I whipped through making four half-log-cabin blocks yesterday. I’ll need a lot more before deciding on how best to arrange them …

Besides which, today I also want to try using more rows with narrower strips. Maybe even settle on a target size for the blocks … or not. Ha!

In any case, you may have noticed that Parker contributed a rainbow patch for E’s coverlet, made with Inktense pencils …

It was pure coincidence that this was what she was doing at pre-school …

I had fun explaining the making of her own coverlet to P as the fact that it was made with her baby clothes didn’t sink in back when she was only two. All she knew was “Nana made it” and that has been more than enough up until now …

I’m thinking hers will take on new meaning as she sees the making of E’s coverlet unfold.

Testing, testing … check, check

So I finished Remember 2021 and I finished Moon Myth. But I don’t honestly feel like finishing the family sampler right now.

Okay then … time to start a new project. And what better than the long-planned coverlet for Ellis to be made with pieces from some of her baby clothes (which were disassembled some time back) along with some gifted and purchased cloth …

As with P’s coverlet

there will be several kinds of blocks to piece together. Nine-patches for sure, and random rows of cloth, and new for this time, half-log-cabin blocks. Sorta like this, I’m thinking …

Which means, now that I’ve tested this new-to-me pattern with non-Ellis clothing, it’s time to get started for real.

Done and done

We both finished projects today!

Don’s acrylic take on a photo from our recent New Mexico jaunt …

and my cloth book Moon Myth

Here’s the story of how the cloth book ended up.

The story began in May 2018 when I started to play around with ideas (click the pix to see complete images) …

And fortunately, much of its making was documented in blog links on the new blog and in page form on the old blog.

But as noted recently, I stalled in late 2018 when I tried stitching the plastic impregnated canvas text to the cloth blocks … that was no fun at all.

Fast forward to this past week, when I brought it back out and determined I was going to finish, dammit, come hell or sore fingers.

There were some hiccups along the way, but none of the problems were insurmountable. The most recent involved the too-skinny spine of the book, which I disassembled and then bolstered up by folding and hemming every other page edge …

The disassembling also gave me an opportunity to re-photograph every page with the light box, shown here with a piece of pottery …

But honestly, I still like taking pictures on our soumak rug …

although I promise to do a proper art blog post … eventually.
