Procrastination?

Now that I’m nearing the outer limits of this 5’ x 10’ cloth, I’ve taken it off the table and put it on the floor …

with thanks to Don for his endless patience since it’s smack dab in the middle of everything.

I confess to making new blocks as a way to put off the inevitable task of attaching everything (which isn’t nearly as much fun as creating the blocks) … but I appear to be running out of time and space.

And so, to stretch things out a bit, I took the time to revise one of the blocks that didn’t have quite enough contrast …

then took the orphaned middle from that block and created a new block with a second version of the Oyster Factory painting …

finally finishing off the day’s patchplay with a totally new piece based on a lighthouse painting that Don did …

which just happens to have a strong James Madison University vibe …

Goodness … can you believe my oldest granddaughter is going to turn 20 this week?!

  1. Liz~ Oh wow…I love seeing this coming together…seeing all of the blocks thus far. I can picture your family gathered round – enjoying a meal and each other.
I can’t believe your older grand has grown to 20! She certainly looks like a college student now!
Last but most surely NOT least…Please tell Don that I think he is such an amazing artist!! His work (all of it) could be in any gallery y’all visit. Honest.

    1. it will be a sad day when the cloth is all filled in … but wait … I have another, smaller cloth and an idea of how to stitch it … ha!

  3. Logan has such a sweet smile, and I can see the same smile in you, in her Mom, in her Aunt Meghan and in Parker and Ellis ..I spent some time looking back at your posts on Logan, how each year, she grew and came into her own. I recall her having a strong opinion one year, on what she wanted to be for Halloween, and how with each year, you could see her becoming the lovely young woman that we see in this photo. Dearly loved and loving…Happy Birthday Logan, you are a very special young woman.

As for your patch cloth, when it is finished, I would perform a ritual before placing it on the table: I would drape it around my body, swirling and swooping, flowing and side stepping, a hip shake at each corner of the table to signify JOY: dancing in joy, dancing to honor the treasured art and memories transferred to this cloth by your creativity, dancing in celebration for this is surely a celebration of art, family, memory and simply, life…

    1. that smile is definitely sweetened by Eric, who Logan has been dating for four years … they make such a great pair!

and thank you for this wonderful idea … I had certainly planned to launder the table cloth and dry it in the sun, but now I’m all in with the idea of dancing it back into the house before spreading it onto the table … maybe each and every time!

  4. Logan: smile. How lovely she is! I really like how the log cabin seems to evolve out of the center of the quilt. And to see your pairings and inspirations for color combos is really an amazing way to work.

    1. the evolution was real as the quilt progressed … and having always admired the incredible combinations of color and pattern in your quilts, I feel like this project has enabled me to experience something similar and grow as a result

  5. Logan is a lovely girl and the tablecloth just grows more amazing. I like the “reconstructed” squares; the contrasts are sharpened.

    1. thanks Stephanie … I had meant to mention “design mending” in the context of this quilt, which is a Jude Hill concept that I have found much more satisfying than simply tearing out and doing over

  6. Your granddaughter is gorgeous Liz! And I really like the new look of that patch you redid. Definitely has more pizazz and interest. And really love that new Oyster Factory patch. So many of the paintings in your home are so soothing to the soul.

    1. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to use the purple cloth … this one fit it perfectly (although the black sucks some of the life out of it, so I’m pondering) … and yes, those two have been together for four years now, a friendship forged during online Covid days has grown into more
