Walking on the beach was just what I needed to get out of my summer doldrums … with thanks to daughter Meg for getting us there and back again.
Saturday was a travel day and began at 3:00 am in order to make our 6:30 flight out of Austin …
We flew into Charleston, where Paul had scouted out a great BBQ joint …
After which we headed for Folly Beach, where pelicans awaited us …

July 17, 2021 – Pelican parade
Sunday saw us up early and off to the local beach, where we gathered coquina shells for a necklace …

July 18, 2021 – Coquina butterfly
We were up and out to the beach first thing on Monday, too. You’ll have to take my word for it because there are no pictures of Don and G making the acquaintance of the dolphins swimming within ten yards. But I did manage to figure out the source of the epic bubbles rising out of sand at the edge of the surf …

July 19, 2021 – Surf stealth
And if the afternoon left something to be desired weather wise …
the rain delay provided a great opportunity to explore our rental house, which included some fascinating original art …
not to mention reading material, about which more later.

Love to relive the week through your posting ❤️ keep em coming!

Liz~ This looks like a lovely re-charging! You’ve captured the shells/birds beautifully 🙂 The art is interesting. The last one especially makes me want to play with paint! Glad you got to go, glad you’re home safe. xo

thanks Nancy … the pineapple was encaustic, with incredible texture … I don’t think I’ve seen one at that scale before (it was easily 4×3′)

thanks Mo … at first I was going to abstract them, but couldn’t resist trying to replicate their essence

’twas … and the sand was so different from the Outer Banks … very fine, with a large proportion of equally fine broken shell … amazingly, it didn’t stick to us, so it didn’t get tracked into the house (which was a good thing as there was no outdoor shower)

we missed being with you and your crew, but there was a sweet simplicity to cooking for “only” seven … I’m thinking the shell sand and the shallow beach may be much like Myrtle Beach where A and A went every year … you would have loved the decor in the house

Liz, I am so happy that you and family were able to spend this time together in beautiful surroundings. You are so good at replicating the treasures with stitching. God’s surroundings are a sure fire balm for the soul, mind, spirit and body. xoxo

Grace … your stitched crows have long been an inspiration … I decided to (finally) go for it and try to bring the same spirit to the pelicans … I suspect this will be one of my favorite patches when the year is done

you DID it….your pelicans surpass any crow i’ve stitched. it’s not easy…the urge to
follow the image of them we carry in our minds vs the reality of their shapeshifting
that brings them to life.

These are exquisite. Especially the pelican parade.

I do love pelicans … they so often look like they are playing follow the leader, skimming along the edge of the waves

We went to Rodney Scott’s on opening day! Which was also my sixtieth birthday.
I just love how these patches chronicle your moods, relationships, and activities. You’re so good at creating a creative activity that creates organized discipline.
