Three more

July 23-25, 2021 – Leaving Folly

We don’t usually eat out when we go to the beach, but I’m glad Meg and Paul decided we should take the whole family out for our last night on Folly Island.

With fingers crossed we decided to try LOLO (Locklear’s Lowcountry Grill), as much for the name (our granddaughter Logan’s nickname is Lolo) as for the seemingly good reviews … followed by a last walk to Bert’s for ice cream cones …

Suffice it to say that our menu choices earned enthusiastic thumbs up: hushpuppies, she crab soup, fried mud bugs (aka crawfish), shrimp (three ways), flounder, grits, fries and slaw … all happily eaten on the outdoor deck overlooking the water.

The only down side was no “merch” as we were very much hoping to bring home a t-shirt or two. Ah well, at least we have lots of good memories to look back on …

Our last day on the island was spent packing up to leave by 11:00 and then finding ways to spend our time until a 6:30 pm flight out. So we went to Charleston, where we had Texas-style BBQ for lunch and the kids explored the Children’s Museum …

We made one last stop on the way to the airport: a drive-by pilgrimage to Mother Emanuel AME Church …

scene of a tragic shooting in 2015 that brought many of us together when Dee Mallon suggested the creation of a Hearts for Charleston quilt. I’ll be forever grateful for that experience.

Unfortunately, the flight home was more daunting than usual. Sadly, I now know when a plane is overfilled with fuel, you get to exit the plane while they empty the fuel tanks and try to get it right the second time. N.B. Don’t throw out your boarding pass until you arrive at your final destination … you might need it 😉

The good news is, the Olympics were on when we woke up Sunday morning. So we had something to occupy our time in between laundry and cat naps …

July 25, 2021 – Ring dance

which kinda explains the less-than-complete logo … ha!

July 20-22, 2021 – Folly Beach continued

Tuesday I did not go to the beach … too many stairs in the rental house had my sciatic nerve sending clear signals to STOP.

But I did make a tide chart with G, so he would know whether the tide was rising or falling at the beach …

Turns out there was a sand dollar waiting to be found at low tide …

with lots of other fun besides …

And if I missed being on the beach, at least there was rainy afternoon fun to be had making cookie dough …

Fortunately, after a full day of abstaining from stair climbing, I was ready to return to the beach on Wednesday. We headed for the County Park, a paid parking beach that was much more in keeping with our young folks/old folks vibe …

And if it rained, yet again, that afternoon, we took solace in playing Peace Ninjas (because this Nana is unwilling to play good guys/bad guys so we do tree pose to warm up and then save the world together) …

Best of all was dinner … North Carolina sourced crab cakes (at an eye-popping $50 per pound, worth every penny) …

followed by a sighting of the waxing gibbous moon …

which G aptly called a “lemon moon” … a perfect view of which can be seen on Barry’s blog.

And through it all I was reading a biography of Agnes Martin … one I had reserved at the library in anticipation of our autumn trip to New Mexico, but which was handily available on the bookshelves in the vacation house.

Thursday I walked a prayer while beach combing. And as I did, I thought of the Kindred Spirits, picking up shells that reminded of Agnes Martin’s penciled grids and subtle colors …

and her words: “The response to art is … feeling, not intellectual … true feelings such as you would have at the beach — freedom, joy, gratitude, innocence, harmony, content(ment?), the sublime …”

July 17-19, 2021 – Folly Beach, South Carolina

Walking on the beach was just what I needed to get out of my summer doldrums … with thanks to daughter Meg for getting us there and back again.

Saturday was a travel day and began at 3:00 am in order to make our 6:30 flight out of Austin …

We flew into Charleston, where Paul had scouted out a great BBQ joint …

After which we headed for Folly Beach, where pelicans awaited us …

Sunday saw us up early and off to the local beach, where we gathered coquina shells for a necklace …

We were up and out to the beach first thing on Monday, too. You’ll have to take my word for it because there are no pictures of Don and G making the acquaintance of the dolphins swimming within ten yards. But I did manage to figure out the source of the epic bubbles rising out of sand at the edge of the surf …

And if the afternoon left something to be desired weather wise …

the rain delay provided a great opportunity to explore our rental house, which included some fascinating original art …

not to mention reading material, about which more later.
