Over the years both Meg and Meliss have tried to convince me to get a stand mixer … as in “I’d like to get you one for (fill in the blank) Christmas/Mother’s Day/your birthday.”
Always I’ve said “thank you, but no thank you … I don’t have enough counter space and really, my hand mixer is all I need” …

After all, my mom did just fine all those years without a stand mixer. Well, except when she first married and had a Mixmaster like this one …

Which, come to think of it, was kinda fun to use.
And I have to confess it has been getting harder to make batches of cookie dough these days … well, except when I’m at somebody else’s house and can use their stand mixer …
So when Meliss asked again last month, she “won” the maybe-I-can-convince-Mom-this-time lottery. Which is to say, I finally said “I’d love it.” And I might also have suggested it be a combined Mother’s Day/birthday gift … because, you know, me being me.
Thus it was, in a fine bit of perfect timing, a brand-spanking-new Kitchenaid 3.5 quart mixer arrived midway between Mother’s Day and my upcoming 65th. Turns out I actually do have room for it on the counter and am currently auditioning potential locations …
just in time for Cowboy Camp!
But that’s another story …

Yep, that’s the mixer my mom had too. She of course gifted me with one when I got married in 1979. Traditions! Yours is so beautiful, sleek! I’m sure you will put it to very good use. Does it have the attachment for mixing bread dough? If so, I have a very good recipe for you, that the grands will love 🙂 Have fun!

Yes, there is a bread hook so I’d love to have the recipe!

LA – grand that you got lots of use out of your handheld machine; but now also good that you are so well placed to create more with the heavy duty – I’m sure the little folk will enjoy that. And the cowboy camp??? Go well. B

my joints are looking forward to letting the Kitchenaid do the heavy mixing … with 12 of us gathering at the end of the month we’ll need mega batches of cookie dough …

51 years ago, a Sunbeam mix master was one of our favorite wedding gifts. When we moved to Maui in 2002, I donated it to a local charity and never replaced it. Never have had a Kitchenaid. Still do all of my baking using a hand held mixer just like in your 2nd photo or sometimes I don’t even use that resorting to my good old wooden spoons to stir and mix. I’m sure if my grand kids lived close by, I probably would have resorted to owning a Kitchenaid. My daughter has one and my granddaughter has become quite adept at using it.

our grandkids all have stand mixers at home … they can probably teach me a thing or two

Have only always used a hand mixer .. have thought a kitchen aid would be nice but truly never had room for one. Also have never had a kitchen large enough for a dishwasher. Although my husband would disagree since he mostly does the dishes 😄

like your husband, mine does the pots, pans, etc that I don’t put in the dishwasher … lucky us!

Mine is butter yellow and I like to make butter with it. And other things too.

making butter … I don’t think I’ve ever done that, but I’m guessing the grands would be happy to help me try it

They would love the part where it separates from cream into butter and whey. It splashes dramatically if you aren’t paying attention and don’t lower the speed on the mixer. The other tip I have is to remember the rinse water needs to be cold, not hot. 🙂

thanks for helping me along the learning curve (I’m thinking some advance trials might be in order)

I love the way you are auditioning positions for it very much! The timing seems pitch perfect too – enjoy!

I’m currently pondering a window bench location that is accessible to the littlest grandkids … but that will require a spatter backstop to avoid coating my windows with cookie dough (or cream from butter making)
