You know it’s cold (and that you have terrible insulation) …

when the ice is inside the windows …

There have been (and will continue to be) rolling blackouts to conserve energy. Likewise, there were no tire tracks on the street until 8:30 …

after an estimated 4″ snowfall overnight …

but it’s hard to tell due to drifting …
I mean, this is a roofed porch after all.
Not to mention there is a day’s accumulation of ice lurking below. Definitely a day to put our warmly-socked feet up and drink hot tea …

because the milk (for hot chocolate) is about to run out.
Patchplay to follow …
Update: Another intentional blackout, this time for three hours. We also lost Internet, email, text and cell phone service during the outage. A little unnerving.
Food stores are closed. Even water is affected …

Thankfully, sun is pouring in our windows. We have all the blinds up, gathering all the warmth we can.
P.S. In case you were wondering, I grew up in New York, so I’m used to winter weather. The difference is, we had snowplows and insulation and shovels … not so in Texas. I don’t know if we even have a window scraper in our car anymore.
But all’s well for now. Dinner has been cooked, the house is reasonably warm, and we still own stocking caps and mittens.
And next week? No problem …

We are way warmer than you this morning…right now it is positively tropical… a warm 13 degrees! Today, even though a holiday, is garbage day and as I lugged our container to the curb, I couldn’t get the top open, iced shut and wondered how the garbage collectors would handle it or even if they would come. A few years ago, they simply couldn’t get through the streets after a massive snow storm that shut New Mexico’s borders but come they did and somehow, the lid was opened and the container set back with a dusting of ice on the cover…all in a days work to these unsung heroes who take care of business as best they can.

Was just reading on our news web page about Texas and the weather and power outages – keep warm! and drink tea (for as long as you have milk!)

Hi LA – it seems crazy that it is so cold in Texas and with so many restrictions on top of it all. rigging up and drinking warm drinks sounds good. Hoping the snow and cold lifts soon. B

B (and all) … the bottom line is our homes, roads and infrastructure aren’t designed for this kind of cold, just as Minnesota isn’t designed for our kind of summer heat
Sadly, I’m afraid climate change is very real (deniers notwithstanding) and the weather extremes are going to continue to become stronger and longer
