January 25, 2021 – A vial of Hope

Erin Zwiener is a fantastic Texas House representative. Not only is she a three-time Jeopardy champ, she takes communicating with her constituents very seriously. Thus it was we got notice that a vaccination portal was opening late last week for 1,950 county residents who qualified as 1A or 1B recipients. First come, first served.

When the appointed time came, Don and I got in our respective devices and started trying to get through. It wasn’t easy. In fact, Don compared it to trying to get Springsteen tickets. But we kept at it and both succeeded in getting appointments. A mere 25 minutes after the portal opened, all the slots were full.

Today we went to the San Marcos High School and stood in extremely well-organized lines, with everyone masked, socially distanced, and hand sanitized. I wore a Life is Good t-shirt that seemed particularly well-suited to the occasion …

2020 – Just a phase

and took a little Hope along with me …

The happy ending to the tale is we were also given appointments for second doses three weeks hence. I’m feeling very relieved, but won’t truly breathe easy until many many millions more people, friends and family especially, are likewise protected.

Process notes: I woke in the middle of the night and thought of Hazel … more specifically, I thought of her stitched jars and bottles. And I was going to say that Pfizer vials aren’t nearly as magical, but then decided actually yes, they are.

Above us only sky

January 24, 2021 – Sand, sea and sky

As I went through my morning laptop routine (online Austin American Statesman, calendar, email (and spam), WordPress comments (and spam), FaceBook (and spam), New York Times Spelling Bee (always going for “Genius”), saving Kindred Spirit blogs for last (my breakfast “dessert”), I got stuck on this calendar entry …

Hmmm, what was I thinking? It actually took a little digging in the January 25, 2020 post before I came on this comment by Fiona …

So I went back to Acey’s Collage Challenge prompt to tell a story of self above, below, and within. What came to mind was how much I have always loved contemplative walks along the edge of the sea. And how I have long considered the nexus of those three elements to be the very definition of heaven. All this, ironically, as John Lennon’s lyrics to Imagine played in my head …

And so, a bit of shibori for the sky, Deb Lacativa magic for the sea, and prairie tea dyed linen for the sand.

All the while recalling that Don just happened to bring out our bowl of shell sand from the Outer Banks on Friday …

Imagine.

January 23, 2021 – Gold braid

I first got to know Acey last year during a month of Collage Challenge. It was an amazing journey, so I was delighted to see a new, but different kind of prompt on her blog this week: to make a braid of yellow threads.

It didn’t take much effort to find the right threads as I’ve been using yellow and gold all week. I quickly braided three strands together and back-stitched them into a piece of Burnley and Trowbridge linen …

And really, the through line is as simple as this: it has been a golden week …
