Life as it happens

I wrote a whole post about the teacher who was shot by a six-year-old student in Newport News … then deleted it.

Suffice it to say that teaching runs in our family … as does attendance at James Madison University, where our granddaughter Logan is a freshman …

I had just started a new project with some cloth leftover from a JMU quilt that was made for Logan by a friend of her mom’s … it has now taken on new meaning …

On a more positive note, I was quite proud of myself for putting together a calendar of Don’s paintings as a Christmas gift …

He now has it hanging on the wall in his studio and I have one above the ironing board in my workroom, along with three previous years of calendars from Debbie Carroll and last year’s calendar from Saskia

I used Shutterfly and was able to add family birthdays and Full Moon days to the more traditional holidays for 2023 …

I may post a picture each month, much as Nancy did with her calendar last year. But in the meantime, here are the images I used …

And I laughed as I just now realized I didn’t even use all the pictures I took of Don’s artwork. Which is actually okay … at the rate he’s going, there shouldn’t be any problem having enough material for a 2024 calendar.

Game on

Two years ago I created a family version of a popular board game that I called Travelopoly.

This year’s inspiration came from a popular card game, which became GNOME-O

As ever, I tweaked the rules to suit my sense of fair play …

commissioned Don to create a series of gnome paintings …

and surveyed the year’s pictures …

to use in place of the numbered cards …

The cards themselves were created using the services of makeplayingcards.com, which did a very serviceable job (although their shipping charges were ridiculous).

Sadly, the game playing that I had anticipated during our family get together the week after Christmas never materialized. Although we managed to make it to St Louis (thanks to my son-in-law who booked the last seats on an American Eagle flight), our luggage remained in Austin due to the not-to-great Southwest Airlines meltdown.

We are now back home and fortunately reunited with our luggage. Here’s hoping Southwest reimburses us for the postage required to mail everyone’s presents.

Ho Ho Ho …

Continuing

First and foremost, Happy New Year to one and all … may it be a gentle year.

And oh, I have so many stories to tell, some dating back to October! Which is to say, I have no excuse for not blogging more regularly.

For now, here are some of the ornaments I made for family and friends this Christmas, first teased in this photo which only showed the backs …

They were inspired by a free Ann Wood pattern, but made using English paper piecing rather than patchwork …

The cloth came from Parker’s 2018 Christmas dress, long since outgrown …

and I’ve already got my eye on this year’s dress for future projects …

So that’s it for now … but I do hope to be back more regularly in the days to come. Happy days!
