Good Friday

School was out so Parker spent the morning with us. First we made Simnal Cake

And I have to say I’ve been opting to mix small batches of cookie dough and cake batter by hand. It takes a little longer, but it’s more fun that way when you have company in the kitchen.

Then I asked P if she would like to stitch an Easter egg. She lit on a piece of Deb Lacativa dyed damask in the cloth closet (good eye, kid). After a quick press, I sketched a broken egg on the cloth and P went to work …

She added her own design inside the lines and kept on stitching …

to very good effect …

A very good Friday indeed.

Gifted

After my parents both passed away (my mom in 2008 and my dad in 2012) my brother and I divided their estate. Of course, there were some things we both wanted. Fortunately, both of us got more than everything we needed. So long story short, it worked out.

Except … there was one painting in my parents’ Shelter Island house that I loved …

It was painted by Rufus Coes and probably purchased shortly after Don and I married, judging by this 1978 article recently found by my sister-in-law …

I confess I was saddened when I learned that my brother had passed the painting on to his son …

But then it occurred to me that I have a painter in the house. So I asked Don if he could paint his own version …

and good man that he is, he did 💕

A great long weekend

Today has been quiet, spent quilting part of My Heart’s Compass with some variegated Valdani perle cotton …

But weekend got started early on Friday when school was closed, so Griffin and Parker came over to spend a busy day with us. P is in Kindergarten and it’s her week to be the Star Student, which includes bringing the class pet Cheetie the Cheetah home for the weekend. Part of the fun is documenting Cheetie’s doings …

Along the way, I tried to capture a good picture of my favorite roadside wildflower patch …

which Parker interpreted in her first ever piece of needlework …

Although I’m sorry to confess I have no pictures of her stitching, I suspect there will be future opportunities.

Last but not least, here’s the book Parker wrote to bring to class tomorrow …

adding author and illustrator to her list of accomplishments (said the proud Nana).
