Live music came back to town as Buda sponsored the first-ever concert in the City Park that was intended to open one year ago but for Covid …

We got there early, not knowing what to expect …

which turned out to be a good move because even though there were only 200 or 300 people by the time the concert started, we were able to grab what little shade there was to fend off the Texas summer heat.

We’ve seen Ray Wylie in concert eight or nine times over the years, as well as on Austin City Limits (recorded without an audience, also because of Covid) …

As he says himself, Ray is an acquired taste, but if you are intrigued by the notion of singer/songwriter who likes to talk about Rainer Maria Rilke, but also penned Redneck Mother, you might want to take a peek at the ACL episode.

The music in Buda was better than fine, including an epic two-minute jam by Ray’s son Lucas … too long for the video I recorded, but you can get a taste of it about two-thirds of the way into this video of Wanna Rock & Roll from a couple of years ago.

Process notes: I feel like I got a bit too precious with this patch, but it was geeky good fun putting together a musical staff with Ray’s initials embedded in a half note, an F# and a C chord … all on a scrap from Meg’s one-time shorts (I love it when she gives me first dibs on her clothing donations).

June 10, 2021 – Imitation, the sincerest form of flattery

My folks built a place out on Shelter Island when they retired in the 1980s. These days, it is my brother Art’s home-away-from-home.

Even though I haven’t been there since 2013 when we interred my parents’ ashes, I “visit” vicariously through the pictures my sister-in-law Diane posts on Facebook.

Thursday she posted a link to this partial eclipse photo in The Shelter Island Reporter …

with my brother’s byline.

It was the next best thing to being there.

I “paved” a piece of yellow linen with two strands of Deb’s thread worked in Jude’s split backstitch (today’s post coincidentally including both the sun and split backstitch) …

School’s out, so we get to see Griffin when we head up to Austin during the day …

Having heard about Parker’s newfound appreciation for artichokes, G asked when he might get a taste.

“Someday soon, buddy … someday soon,” was our reply.

It’ll be fun to see Parker coach him through the proper technique for eating those butter-dipped leaves of goodness. But having rescheduled our day with P, it wasn’t to be this time around; G had a prior engagement with a former classmate. So we just picked up P on Wednesday, which happened to be face-painting day …

“That looks like a patch,” was my first thought. Sure enough, two days later a wild bit of Deb’s cloth called out to be included. A good call, I’d say.

And, as always, our time together with P was well-spent …
