This one’s for the girls

June 25-27, 2021

It’s August and I am unapologetically writing about June. Coincident with Jude’s recent post, I’m also thinking about audience for this blog, about which more to come. But for now, this is just to say that my grandchildren are much on my mind as I write about our week-long reunion in Austin.

Meliss and her boys arrived from St. Louis on Friday, June 25 …

The kids wasted no time getting down to play, building a fort and serving up ice cream …

And Ellis, who loves her J, absconded with his hat …

Unfortunately, Southwest was having a meltdown, so Heather and Logan (aka Lolo) didn’t arrive until Saturday. They quickly made up for lost cuddle time …

Sunday was a sunny day, until it wasn’t …

The rain didn’t last too long though and as dinner time drew near, the sound of an ice cream truck floated through the air. But where?

Meg and Meliss jumped in the car and hunted down the Mister Softee guy, who promised to head for the house, much to the anticipation of all, especially the Littles …

Until Ellis realized … “Big truck … I (s)cared.”

Fortunately, a snuggle from Nana and a taste of PopPop’s ice cream cone saved the day … after which everyone ate all their dinner …

Because … pizza!

Birthday Season

July 31, 2021 – J’s Nine

I’ve long wanted to try Jude’s faux piecing, made by stitching folds on a single piece of cloth and then cutting them open to form seams …

I just wish I could remember which of her many classes it was so I could properly credit it.

Anyway, with Jackson turning 9 (and here I pause to ask, how is it possible these pictures were taken nine years ago?) …

I wanted to create a grid to represent nine things he loves.

His family and friends …

Texas and the beach …

The St Louis Cardinals and the Blues …

Cool cars and playing soccer …

And last, but not least, did I mention family?

Because

July 30, 2021 – Square peg, round hole

I’m looking forward to another class I’ve signed up for …

for lots of reasons: because I wish I had gotten more out of the art classes I took years ago … because I admire the composition and color-sense of so many Kindred Spirits … because I’m endlessly fascinated by watercolor paintings … because I want to know more so I can do more.

That’s really the crux of it, I guess … the wanting to learn thing. I hope my grandkids get that about me, that I always want to know more.

But the most important “because” is having fun. Something I fully intend to do when we head out to St Louis to celebrate Jace’s 7th birthday and Jackson’s 9th birthday.

And if, as I suspect, they’re not exactly thrilled about getting a set of World Book encyclopedias (because, after all, they’re perfectly normal kids), I do hope they’ll have fun playing backgammon and drawing together …

I know I will …
