Where to begin? With Don’s socks, which all sprouted holes after a summer in storage?

Or with the really cool fingering yarn dyed by a former colleague in Virginia (named Oliver in honor of his black cat)?

Or maybe the equally cool Blue Without You yarn dyed by his spouse?

Maybe all of the above, along with some hand-dyed black linen from Stitch in Dye in Austin and a vintage darner found on eBay …

I experimented with darning in Oliver black …

I played with darning in Blue without You …

and then I just freestyled (upper and lower left), which turned out to be my favorite way to go (what a surprise) …

So today’s patch is a replay, this time using the black linen and some variegated #12 Valdani perle cotton (with thanks to Deb Sposa who put me onto it) …
It was the perfect way to spend a snowy day in Texas. But that’s another story …

Lovely mending! I especially like that colorful yarn, but I’m always thinking medicine bags 😉
I really do like the idea of, the philosophy of, the usefulness of darning socks…but, my feet couldn’t stand the feel of it! My mom used to darn socks when she was young. Your patch today reminds me of when I added the tiny weaving onto the cloth for Wendy’s kids. A good memory. Wonderful texture.

there is something about darning socks that goes straight to my heart. I’ve never
done it…i saw the darning wool and the egg in my mother’s sewing box but i don’t
remember ever seeing her use them…but it’s such a strong feeling…seeing his feet
with the socks….

I almost look forward to things wearing out … which is a good thing because I’ve got quite a few thin spots threatening to break through

What lovely darning! Amazing work and how good to be able to keep the socks going. Love the little patch too it seems perfect in its original imperfection if you get what I mean. Maybe it’s the perfecting of imperfection. Or something.

Hello Liz! I’m spending this evening trying to catch up with all you’ve been doing. I so admire your discipline which I seem to have lost this past year. Just saw the “shout out” for the threads. Thanks for that! Love this little patched patch. And Don’s socks are so much fun! Can’t wait to see what else you’ve been up to.
