Therapy

I’ve been loving Acey’s collage challenge and my mind is bubbling with ideas for today’s treasure box prompt, but …

I have missed cloth. And as the impeachment trial begins, hard on the heels of the angst-inducing gun rights rally in my one-time home state of Virginia, I crave the calming, familiar rhythm of stitch.

So this then, row upon row of discontinuous backstitch in variegated Valdani #12 perle cotton …

which looks like running stitch …

but when worked on the “wrong side” it leaves a wonderfully wonky trail of stitches on the “right side” …

And since I’m testing the new light box …

here are some progressively closer views (because I very much like progressive views) …

And pulling back, the big picture of a thrift store linen shirt, previously dyed with windfall lichen …

and obviously not ironed anytime recently. Nor is it destined to be.

  1. Understand the need for stitch. My hands have been idle in the evenings and it feels weird. This is a beautiful up cycle and the photos are professional grade!

  2. This is gorgeous, Liz. If I wasn’t actually in charge of this challenge I would have taken 2-3 stitching or painting days by now simply for the familar soothing tactile nature of stitch and also for the way painting takes me all the way out of collective reality.

  3. Wow Liz! I love it. Your comments helped me focus on the fact that I started a small weaving today 🙂
It’s something. When the radio wasn’t on the hearing, it was on news out of Montana – wanting to mix up school – church.

  4. Ahhh it is lovely to see that fabulous stitching! What a stunner. I really really like the little crosses on the side with the buttons…sigh. You know how sometimes things just say hello to your soul? Feels good.

    1. Today (or more likely tomorrow) I hope to find time for more Xs and Os on the facing placket … glad to hear the stitches have sent out some good vibes

    1. Thank you Louise … I write it yesterday and my five-month old granddaughter kept reaching out to touch it … never the blank cloth, just the stitching

  5. “Cascade of colors” is what instantly came to mind when I saw your stitching on this garment. Fascinating how side a and side b, so-to-speak, can offer such variety of results. I, too, am fascinated by your light box. A great idea. I have been following your other projects and applaud, once again, your ability to bring those mediums to life! Blessings.

    1. I used five colors, trying always to keep one “block” from touching another … a classic mapmaker’s trick … but since my blocks were far from blocks, they did indeed “Cascade” (a lovely tie-back to our old Hill Country home)
